| i flew on "frontier"---with a ram on my plane's tail to denver and a deer on my tail to cincinnati.
i was feeling happy and strong, snuggling my emotions under a blanket of fluffy clouds when the woman next to me
opened with non-threatening personal questions transitional nonchalant "why don't you open your own bible and i'll show you a few things" buildup of specific verse to specific verse
i think she was a jehovah's witness.
i made it out ok, pushing through my discomfort and disbelief and her brusque certainty with a couple of carefully chosen rejoinders...
"you search the scriptures thinking that in them you will find eternal life..." "i have many more things to tell you, but you can not bear them all now, but when he, the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth."

welcome to your new home---me! i mean... you are banished from my body forever or til the next booster.

| looking for tailors to make me ankle-length skirts. but it's sunday.
reading about well-intentioned, ill prepared kids that go on the development equivalent of short-term mission trips, and what the long-term NGO community thinks of them. insert sentiments of any professional toward any amateur.
getting scared at deserts, white women in head coverings, neocolonialism, 3-D identity, my arabic ability, the life of my heart...it seems too simple to trust that his affection for us is louder than our hearts that condemn us, that he'll fill our hearts in every way, no matter where we are, what we get ourselves into---whether we're writing poems for grad school, paying off debt, navigating a splintering marriage or butchering arabic in a freaking desert.
waiting for the fulness of him who fills everything in every way. waiting for the grip of him who will reign until he makes his enemies a footstool for his feet.

| i am comforted by the precision of this library of stalwart book corners and latently-crackling pages. tonight's bedside bookshelf spread pins me to my blow-up mattress. latourette's a history of christianity promises all will be well, even if it takes more than two volumes.
